Foul Mouth

Foul Mouth is unlike any superhero book you’ve ever read…and most certainty ever HEARD!
After the divorce of her parents, teenager Faye Flik is adjusting to her new surroundings. A new city, a new home, and after accidentally getting possessed by a demon, new abilities that turn her curse words into the ultimate weapon against evil.

From the insane brain that brought you fast killer sloths (Slow Pokes), chancleta wielding grandmas who fight zombies (Zombie Date Night) and Santa fighting robots (X-Maschina), comes a superhero whose gift…is to CURSE! With amazing art and colors by Sarah Davidson (Hollow, Hero Too) and lettering that brings the whole project to life by HdE, this 20-page comic is filled with laughs, heart, and a F*#! Ton of action.

“I love making horror comics.” says Urena, but I want to prove that I can make a fun story in as many different genres of comics as possible. I had so much fun writing this and I can’t wait for everybody to meet Foul Mouth.”

First Issue Club had a chance to sit down with Steve to find out more about Faye and her explicit superpower.

FIC: The premise behind 'Foul Mouth' is so unique and funny. Was stepping out of your horror element and walking around a different genre a nice change of pace?

SU: Yes! I love a challenge and Foul Mouth is a project that makes me excited to continue writing comics. I love horror, but I was raised on superheroes and wanted to do something different to keep people guessing. Foul Mouth is such a fun character to write for and I have the chance to show off a more vulnerable and relatable character.

FIC: The concept of someone using "bad words" to do good deeds certainly opens itself up to interesting situations. Is Faye more of an anti-hero trying to find her place in the world than a typical "hero"?

SU: I think Faye is a hero everyone can get behind. I don’t consider her an anti-hero. She’s not The Punisher or Venom where she does evil things on the side. Foul Mouth is a superhero who is trying to find her voice through her cursing superpowers, but her intentions are always to do the right thing.  I do think if we expand Foul Mouth’s world further, she will have some hesitancy from the city she’s protecting due to her language.

FIC: With the ability of having curse words being turned into weapons, do certain words have more power or damage than others? Or is that something we'll find out along the way?

SU: For Foul Mouth, her curses hold the same amount of power. The thing that gives her more power is the creativity of her curses and the emotion behind them. The more creative the curse or tirade/ the more it animates on the page similar to Green Lantern. If she calls someone a shit sandwich, the sandwich will appear to help her fight against villains.

FIC: I think you brilliantly tapped into a subconscious dream for a lot of people with this power that Faye has. Did this idea for the book organically form over a long period of time or was it a 'lightbulb' moment?

SU: Everybody has their own relationship with cursing. I wanted to tap into that with Foul Mouth and so far people have been very supportive and positive about it. The idea came to me during a walk during the pandemic. I came off of Zombie Date Night and wanted to come up with a concept the big two can’t do. I immediately thought of cursing and the idea began to form. I knew it couldn’t just be all cursing, so once I came up with cursing that comes to life, I knew I had something special.

FIC: What would be your Foul Mouth 'finishing move' word?

SU: FUCKSICKLE! Or Goddamnit. If Foul Mouth says Goddamnit, a god can appear and crush her enemies.

FIC: Now that you've written in this genre, what's next?

SU: The sequel to Zombie Date Night is coming next and I’ve been playing around with more serious concepts. I really want to grow as a writer with each new project, so you will definitely see me dabbling in as many genres as I can as long as it’s fun and the story is something I can get excited about.
